Millry Mill Co., Inc came into being after a devastating sawmill fire in 1985 destroyed the W.E Hill Lumber Company and the Hill family decided to not rebuild. James R. Forbes, then manager of Mobile River Sawmill Division for Scott Paper Co. in Mt. Vernon, AL, saw the potential for a small, standalone Southern Pine export mill.
Using his background in independent sawmills, Mr. Forbes developed a strong business plan to bring the sawmill back to the people of Millry, AL. He worked to design and implement restoration of the facility. Financing was arranged with the help of the Alabama Development Office, SBA and private investors.
In early March of 1986, the people of Millry gathered and began reconstruction of the facility, rebuilding their future together. Their dedication and pride of ownership brought the facility together in record time, and in August of 1986, the first lumber was cut in the new mill. Mr. Forbes ensured that those who had been displaced by the fire of 1985 were once again employed using their skills and ensuring the continued goodwill of the community and excellence in quality product.
